The CATENOP initiative was introduced as an attempt to close the gaps caused by the following deficiencies within Nigerian Catholic communities.
General catholic understanding on various subjects
Many Catholics who attend daily and Sunday masses do not have sufficient knowledge on important topics. There is little or no nourishment from faith-based literature, they remain ignorant.
Total near disconnect & lack of familiarity with classics
The average Nigerian Catholic has minimal knowledge on classical Catholic literature and so loses out on the numerous impactful teachings contained in those resources.
Doctrinal familiarity gap
There are huge gaps in the understanding of Catholic doctrinal teachings. Many people find some teaching abstract in nature and only applicable in time past.
The tendency people have to develop a lack of confidence that the church has more to offer
Many Catholics restrict the influence of the church to homily messages at mass. This leads them to prematurely discount the church as having a lot of knowledge or solutions to their problems.
Literacy gap
Many of the classical literature may be difficult to comprehend due to the age in which they were written, and/or the societal contexts. A number of people within the Nigerian Catholic community especially those in rural and semi-urban areas may not easy read and understand the literature in such a way as to comfortably apply the lessons to their personal experiences.
