Sacramental Marriage
SACRAMENTAL MARRIAGE AND A FLOURISHING SOCIETY (culled from The First Society: The Sacrament of Matrimony and the Restoration of Social Order by Scott Hahn)
In the last five decades, marriage has declined while the number of broken families has sharply increased. The ills of society that we face today are the direct result of the breakdown of the traditional family. When father and mother are not together the tendency for the children to adopt bad behavior becomes high and this can cause them to stray from God’s plan for their lives.
Scott Hahn in his book titled The First Society: The sacrament of Matrimony and restoration of social Order points outs that our society is plagued with lots of evils ranging from government playing the wrong roles in our lives, people trying to acquire more than they need with little or no regard to human dignity, lack of sexuality or insufficient sexuality and so many other corrupt practices.
All of these problems begin with who we are and have become as human beings, and how we relate with God.
Just like we a taught in school, the family which consists of Father, mother and children is the primary unit that makes up a society. The family starts with the union between man and woman in marriage. If we get marriage right, we not only transform our families…we transform the world.
When we take a look at the society we have today and ask ourselves the question: What kind of society will we leave for our grandchildren? What answers do we get? While we may not be able to control the growing modern culture, we can do our best to ensure that our offspring inherit the true faith. This can be achieved by living out the faith. When we and our household live the faith, God’s transforming grace will impact the world in which we live.
God has provided us with divine graces through marriage but a lot of us reject those graces and that is one of the reasons for some of our societal problems. The family, formed through the Sacrament of Matrimony, is the most basic building block of every society—whether we like it or not. We’ve corrupted marriage, and so we have a corrupt society. If we get marriage right, our society, through God’s grace, will flourish.
If we are serious about creating a vital and sustainable culture of marriage, we must be honest about the central role of God and His Church in that culture. God’s grace is the oxygen for the flame of marriage; our secular, liberal civilization destroys it.
This is so because Matrimony, like all the sacraments, heals and elevates human nature. With it, the seemingly impossible, a truly peaceful and humane civilization, becomes possible. It is through the power of the Sacrament of Matrimony, that couples receive the grace to live counter-culturally, in mutual love and unity. “By healing our spiritual wounds, perfecting our nature, and elevating us to God’s level, grace makes community possible.
Our personal, marital, and familial witness is the essential element in the sacramental society. It requires holy, virtuous people who form holy, virtuous families that in turn form holy, virtuous societies. We do not just need a culture of natural marriage-marriage contracted without the sacrament of matrimony- We need a culture of sacramental marriage.
We need sacramental a society. If Catholics would simply live the Sacrament of Matrimony for one generation, we would witness a transformation of society and have a Christian culture.”
